Watch care and use

Many avoidable problems begin in ordinary moments: winding, changing the date, contact with water or storage beside a magnet. This guide gathers the operating habits that help protect movement and case.

Winding and restarting

Find the manual for the exact calibre before first winding it. Some automatic movements support hand-winding and others impose their own limitations; crown direction and feel also vary. Turn it calmly and stop when a hand-wound movement gives clear resistance. There is no universal safe number of turns for every watch.

When an automatic watch has stopped, a few crown turns may start it, but subsequent replenishment depends on the wearer’s movement. Test stated reserve only from full wind. Repeated stopping during ordinary wear may reflect low activity or a condition that needs diagnosis.

Setting time and date safely

In a calendar movement, the change begins before midnight and finishes after it. Quick-set correction during that interval may conflict with parts already engaged. The exact danger zone belongs to the calibre, so first move the hands to a safe daytime position, set the calendar and only then set the current time as the manual directs.

Return the crown fully to its operating position, or screw it down if threaded. Do not force a date that refuses to change. Repeated binding, an incomplete transition or an unusual sound is a reason to stop and seek service rather than press harder.

Water, crystal and case

Water resistance changes with time as seals age, and a blow to crown or crystal can disturb component seating. Test the case after it is opened, the crystal is replaced or a substantial impact occurs. A hot shower and abrupt temperature change impose a different load from calm immersion in cool water.

Sapphire resists scratches but not every impact; mineral glass can chip and acrylic can scratch. Edge damage or condensation beneath the crystal requires prompt diagnosis. Until it is checked, keep the watch away from water.

Magnets and rate observation

Speakers, magnetic clasps, cases and induction devices produce fields of different strengths. There is no universal safe distance, so avoid placing a watch directly on a source. If its rate changes abruptly after contact, record the deviation over several days and tell the watchmaker what happened.

Do not regulate from one casual reading. Compare the watch with a reliable time source at the same moment, record its overnight position and state of wind. A strong persistent gain may suggest magnetism; a changing result may call for a broader examination.

When to consult a watchmaker

Seek diagnosis for a sudden rate change, sharply reduced reserve, rotor noise or contact, a stiff crown, calendar failure, condensation or a serious impact. Use the maker’s service guidance and adjust it for wearing conditions; there is no single interval for every calibre.

Before service, record the full model and calibre, symptoms and when they occur. Afterwards, ask what was replaced, whether water resistance was tested and what measurements were obtained. Quartz watches also rely on seals and healthy power cells: the absence of a mainspring does not remove the need to care for the case.
